On December 29, 2021, Peer 1 on 1 held a training session with professional Viviana Barnwell, a long-term trainee of LEND at the MIND Institute of UC Davis and Governor’s Appointee to the State Council on Developmental Disabilities. As the mother of a 9-year-old boy with multiple developmental disabilities, she was inspired to change her career and advocate autism inclusivity. Viviana’s message helped our volunteers understand who our peers really are outside the label of “autistic,” and she enlightened us of the different languages and manners we should be aware of to include and protect our peers. Thank you, Viviana Barnwell, for your presentation and advice on how to better communicate with our peers, which as we learned from you, is the key. It was a great way to end 2021, so thank you to everyone who attended. Have a wonderful new year!
